Chapter 1:Breaking the Habit Disclaimer: I own nothing Rating: Teen Summary: Year 7 at Hogwarts, Things change, So do people.
I don't want to be the one, The battles always choose, Cause inside I realize, That I'm the one confused, I don't know what's worth fighting for, Or why I have to scream, I don't know why I instigate, And say what I don't mean, I don't know how I got this way, I know it's not alright, So I'm breaking the habit, I'm breaking the habit, Tonight
It’s so hard to go on everyday and wear the smirk I hate so much, to torment, tease and hate people I don’t even dislike, my equals, my peers. But yet why is it so hard to stop? Why is it so hard for me to break the habit?
‘This year will be different’ I told myself again for the 6th year running. But this year I meant it. Now that father had been given the kiss and The great Dark Lord had been taken out by Potter and his musketeers. ‘Well there I go again’ I sighed.
I striped of to my boxers and climbed between the sheets. Tomorrow was my first day of my final year at Hogwarts and I had to look my best. Yawning I rolled over and drifted into an easy sleep
Meanwhile on the other side of London….
‘Damnit’ I swore for the 10th time in the last hour. It was now one AM. I had to leave for the Hogwarts express in 6 hours. I was stressing out about my current predicament. You see I had change, for the good or worse I don’t know. Don’t get me wrong I was still the know-it-all Gryffindor book worm that you all know and love. But my appearance and attitude had.. well lets just say ‘developed’ I had awesome curves and buy did I love to flaunt what my mother gave me. I had grown my hair long and it was finally straight. I had died it a lighter brown and had the darker colour as highlights. I had gone from well you could say a whiney little bitch to a tougher and more confident character. I was loving this new me. But would my friends still like me for me?
My parents being busy all summer didn’t spend much time with me at all expect at dinner time. And that was usually around 9 when they got home. Then they’d go to bed and be gone by the time I got up each morning. I guess I cant use them as an excuse. Them spending less time with me was in a way a god send. They used to be too over-protective and just outright annoying and a pain in my ass. I guess they thought that now I was of age in the magical world, that I was now someone who was totally independent. I don’t know but what ever it was I kind of liked it. I hated it for the first couple of weeks cos I had no idea what to do with myself.
But then I discovered the clubbing scene. I made a few muggle friends for the first time in my life and I felt hot. No one, not even Ron would second glance me but the guys at Vertigo, swooned over me. In one word it was awesome. Vertigo was the local club that I spent most of my nights, with a fake ID, getting drunk and having the time of my life.
With one last turned I drifted off into an uneasy sleep.

Chapter 2 everything the same as before
“I like your pants around your feet, I like the dirt that’s on your knees, And I like the way you still say please, When you’re looking up at me, You’re like my favourite damn disease.”
The funniest thing is, even though I had a good nights sleep, I still couldn’t bring myself to get out of bed and into the shower.
“Master Malfoy, I’ve bought up your breakfast” Ginger’s timid voice slowly penetrated my brain. Ginger is my house-elf and one of my best friends. Contrary to popular belief, I was actually a kind-hearted soul. It’s just that not many people saw that side of me. Just Ginger, Mummy, Pans, and Blaise. I can’t believe I just said mummy. Know you know my week spot.
Slowly I made my way to the bathroom, grabbing a piece of toast on the way. Looking out the window, the sun was bright and there was not a cloud in the sky. It was an unusual start to a new school term, but maybe the gods were on my side. Yes this was definitely a good start to the term.
@@@@@@@@@
Half an hour later I kissed mum good bye and apparated to Platform 9 3/4. I stored my trunk in the heads compartment. Yes that’s right I was head boy. I don’t know how I got the role. But apparently Potter turned it down. I feel sorry for the guy, he probably wants a normal school year. But like that’s ever going to happen at Hogwarts.
I was waiting for Blaise and Pansy, when someone grabbed my attention. She was about 5’4, had a small petite frame with nice curve and great assets. Her long curly hair shimmered in the sun, I had a sudden urge to run my hands through it. She turned on the spot and my jaw dropped. Hermione Granger. She caught my eye for a second, so I gave her a smile shy smile. It wasn’t that often that I smiled. She kind of tilted her head to the side. But then somebody thumped me on the back and our connection was broken.
“Mate, Wat’cha looking at?” It was Blaise. I shook my head slightly.
“Blaise, dude, how have you been?” I asked giving him a brotherly-manly hug.
“Yeah not too bad, you know same old”
“Yeah I know what you mean!! Seen Pans in your travels?”
“As a matter of fact I have” Blaise said with slight amusement in his voice. “She’s over there staring at Weasley like he’s grown an extra head!” I followed the direction in which Blaise was pointing and sure enough there was Pansy Parkinson, openly staring at Ron Weasley. Her mother was slightly open and her eyes were wide. I walked up to her and whispered in her eye “You know it’s rude to stare don’t you?”
She gave a start and turned an awesome shade of magenta. She looked like a sun burnt tomato. She quicly gazed back over her shoulder. Weasley was giving her a strange look that I couldn’t read.
“So, whats so interesting about Ron this year?” Deliberately using his name to see her reaction and to also let her know I was serious that this was the year.
“H-h-he got hot” she stuttered turning a deeper shade of red. “So I see you’re serious about making this year different? Others are going to get to know the Draco I know and love” she said in a higher pitch than usual.
“Yeah of course I’m serious, a Malfoy never backs down on his word, its just taken me a while to get here is all” I laughed slightly and bent down to lightly kiss her cheek. Pansy had grown out of her ‘I have to act like in in love with drakie-poo act’ in second year. But unfortunately for her, she couldn’t quite shake the reputation. A wistle sounded and we made our way to the train.

‘Wow, that was strange I thought to myself’ Malfoy just smiled at me, and it was genuine. And damn it was hot. It was in that moment I realized, he was just like me. He wasn’t superior and he never was, we were equals. Of course I had been debating that thought since 1st year. But at last my internal battle had come to an end. Shaking the thought from my brain for the time being, I continued on my search for Harry, Ron and Ginny. Harry and Ginny had been dating since the end of the war. They made such a cute couple. Both Ron and I decided never to get in a relationship. It wouldn’t ever work. We’d be one of those couples that broke up and got back together every week. Neither of us could handle that.
Finally I spotted Harry and Gin. Making my way to them I saw Ron talking to Dean and Seamus, and by the way he was moving his arms, I figured they were talking about Quidditch.
“Wow, Gin, you look amazing” I commented giving her a hug.
“And you ‘Mione, you look positively hot!” I knew I loved Ginny for a reason. Wow that sounded a bit stuck-up didn’t it.
“Harry, looking handsome as ever” Harry was now 6’1 and had developed a nice amount of muscle, his hair was still as messy and his eyes as green as ever. Harry was giving me one of his bone crushing hugs when Ron decided to join us.
“Hi Ron” I greeted hugging him aswell. He was about 6’2 with well defined muscle. All those years of qudditch were doing the boys good.
Ron looked over his shoulder so quickly I swear it should have kinked. Looking past him, I saw a beet red Parkinson staring at him. What’s the go with the Syltherins today, I thought to myself. Ron shrugged and turned back to face us. He was now a light shade of pink. Aww how cute!
“There’s the whistle. We’d better get on” I said, always the rational one. I guess I hadn’t changed that much after all.
“Well I guess we’ll see you later than, Have a good time and we’ll catch up at the feast” Ginny winked at me, took Harry’s hand and pulled him towards the train before I had time to question her. Ron just gave me a confused look. About a second later you could see the light getting switched on.
“Oh you’re head girl, Congrats”
“Thanks Ron, I’ll catch you later” I gave a small wave before making my way to the heads compartment. Secretly praying that a certain blonde ferret was head boy. I knew Harry turned the position down. He had always said from the start that he would. And for once he was hoping to be a normal student with no extra duties to worry about.

AN: this is important. I’m going to change the story to third person. It will be easier for you guys to follow and a little easier for me to write. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you to those who reviewed. Don’t forget to r&r
Chapter 3: Confessions of a Broken Man
When you’re close to tears, remember, some day it will all be over, One day we’re gonna get so high, though it’s darker than December, What’s ahead is a different colour, One day we’re gonna get so high, The end of the day remember the days when we were close to the end, I wonder how we made it to the night”
Hermione was already in the heads compartment when Draco arrived, She looked up as the door slid open and couldn’t help but smile at what she saw. Draco was 6’4, he still had his pale complexion but now it seemed to suit his pointed facial features. His hair was cut short around his ears and hung lose. His eyes were a beautiful silver, they looked like full moons. But now they seem to hold more life and meaning, they were no longer hollow and full of hate.
Hermione caught herself from her thoughts and turned back to the latest issue of Cosmopolitan, a muggle magazine she had gotten into over the summer break, Draco made his way to sit opposite her. ‘she looks cute when she blushes’ he thought to himself.
After about an hour of silence, Hermione had finished her reading and had taken to playing with a hyperactive crookshanks. Unable to handle the sound of silence, Draco let out a small sigh. ‘I may as well just talk to her now while there’s no interruptions’ he thought.
“Um… Hermione” he started quietly. She looked over at him and caught his eye. He had a very determined look set into his face.
“Yes, Malfoy” she replied, after a second thought “Hey you used my name!”
“Yes I did, and if you don’t mind I would like to call you that from now on. For one it would make our year together so much more pleasant, and two, I would like to take a chance to explain some things to you, that is, if you have time to listen to me of course”
Hermione could tell he was as nervous as hell. But she knew that she had to hear this. There was something in his voice that made her want to listen.
“H-hermione… I know that you might not believe me but all I ask is for you to try. I need you to know this and I know that for anyone to take me seriously that you’re the one I’m going to have to get to believe in me.” he trailed off. Hermione leaned across and took his hand. She didn’t realized at the time but as soon as she did she had no idea what to do, so she gave it a slight squeeze. A blush crept along both of their cheeks. But neither of them broke the contact.
“Since I was a young boy, I was taught to hate everyone and everything that wasn’t a Malfoy. It killed me. I wasn’t allowed to have friends, Blaise and Pansy were the only other kids in the area that I was allowed to associate with, because they were both pureblood and rich. When I was younger, I never questioned Lucius, I knew better than that. He never once showed me love, but I knew when to give him space or approach him. Then when it was time to come to school, I was lectured on the appropriate way to behave. “Malfoy’s are superior, remember that Draco” he said to me as I boarded the train. I didn’t know what else to do but put on an act. All I ever longed for was to have friends, to be accepted. I didn’t even want to be in Syltherin. All these years I’ve been wallowing in self misery and pity. But since you slapped me in 3rd year I started to realize just what my exterior character was like. I desperately wanted to change, to the real me. But I knew better than defy Lucius. It was when he was first put in Azkaban I started feeling this sense of freedom. Then when he was finally given the kiss, I know this sounds horrible, I couldn’t be happier. Mum and I sold the mansion and bought ourselves a smaller but still prestigious property. Life was been so much better, no more hiding in the dark, or a silent mansion. Mum has finally given me a home, not a house but a home. Music fills the hallways, sunlight creeps through the windows and I am no longer scared. Which is why I need you to understand, in a way to help me become a better person.”
A lone tear made a path down Draco’s cheek. Hermione sat open mouthed staring at him in total shock. She hadn’t expected that. She had a hunch that he had changed, that there was something behind the old Draco Malfoy the Amazing Bouncing Ferret. In front of her sat a broken, normal teenage boy.
When she finally came to her senses, Hermione moved to sit next to him and slipped her arm around his shoulder. After about five minutes of silence, Hermione couldn’t take it anymore.
“I understand” Her voice sounded hoarse and cracked. But those to words formed a new bond and friendship between them. It changed their lives forever.
“Can you talk to Potter and Weasley for me?” Draco sounded almost desperate. “I have never truly hated them, ive never even disliked them. I want to apologise but I know that they will never give me the time of day”
“Of course” came the sweet reply. Just then there was a knock on the door. Draco and Hermione sprang apart like an electric volt had just passed through them. The compartment door slid open and in waltzed Blaise and Pansy.
“Oh and the same goes for these two” Draco added, aware of just how uncomfortable the situation had just become. “Only with slightly different stories, but we have all the time in the world to learn about those”
phew Hermione thought. “Hi Zabini, Parkinson” she greeted cheerily. Relived that the tension had left the room. Blaise and Pansy made them selves comfortable on the seat opposite.
“Please, its Pansy and Blaise, I think we’re all mature enough to use our first names.” Pansy said. “Well I might just go and have a quick chat to the boys, tell them the basics, and maybe I could get them and Ginny to join us? We could say just to catch up? Let the new times begin”
“That would be fantastic Hermione, and thank you so much” Blaise’s voice was deep and husky. It’s a wonder why girls weren’t throwing themselves at him.
Hermione turned half an hour later with the boys and Ginny. They had all been interested in what she had to say. Harry and Ginny forgave them easily. Ron however blushed crimson and mumbled something that no one in their right mind could have understood.
Harry entered the heads compartment and shook all their hands and jokingly said “Welcome to the light side” which was his way of breaking the ice. Well lucky for him it actually worked. Ginny gave everyone a radiant smile and a small wave and settled herself in Harry’s lap. Ron was funny. He tripped over his feet and threw him self in an empty seat, and sat their twiddling his thumbs. His face was still a brilliant shad of crimson. Looking around the group Hermione and Draco finally put two and two together. Pansy’s cheeks were a deep maroon. Draco leaned over and whispered to Hermione.
“I think we need to play match maker for these two” he said nodding his head in the direction of Ron and Pansy. Hermione nodded her head and giggled like the school girl she was, in response.
